1 〔論理〕 theory; 〔道理〕 reason; logic.

●理屈どおり logically

・物事は理屈どおりにはいかない. One cannot always regulate things according to one's theory.

・政治は理屈どおりにいくものではない. Politics doesn't (always) follow logic [reason].

・理屈抜きで[に]それが好きだ. I just like it (and I can't explain why).

・この映画は大人も子供も理屈抜きに楽しめる. This film just appeals to both grown-ups and children.

●どうしてこんな簡単な理屈がわからないんだ. Why can't you understand such simple logic [a simple idea]?

・理屈が通らない be unreasonable; do not stand [be contrary] to reason; be illogical

・彼女が言うことは理屈が通らない. What she says doesn't make sense. | There's no logic in her argument.

理屈(の上)は in theory; theoretically

・理屈ではこれでうまくいくはずだ. Theoretically everything should work very well this way.

・理屈ではそうかもしれないが, 現実は違う. What you say may theoretically be correct, but such is not actually the case.

・理屈では割り切れない. Logical explanation isn't enough [satisfactory].

理屈にかなった reasonable; logical

・理屈に合っている stand [conform, be conformable] to reason; be reasonable; accord with reason; be logical

・理屈に合わない unreasonable; illogical; irrational; do not stand to reason

・それでは理屈に合わない. That is contrary to reason [impossible, inconceivable]. | That doesn't make sense. | That can't be. | 《口》 No way!

理屈のわからぬことを言う talk nonsense.

理屈を超越して above reason.

●理屈はわかるんだが, 飛行機みたいな鉄の塊が飛ぶというのはやはり不思議だ. It certainly sounds all right in theory, but still it strikes me as strange that a mass of metal like an airplane should fly in the air.

・理屈は抜きにして実際問題でいこう. Let's tackle facts instead of theories.

・難しい理屈はわからないが, この村では昔からこうしているんだよ. I [we] can't explain the theory behind it, but that's the way it's always been done in this village.

・そんな理屈はない. That's impossible. | That can't be.

・彼はいつも理屈だけで物を考える. His mind runs by reason only.

・なるほどそいつは理屈だね. That's quite logical.

2 〔議論〕 (an) argument; 〔こじつけ〕 a strained [distorted] interpretation; (a) rationalization; 〔言い訳〕 an excuse; a pretext.

●妙な理屈 an unreasonable excuse

・無理な理屈 a far-fetched argument [rationalization]

・もっともらしい理屈 a plausible excuse; a specious pretext.

理屈をこねる argue; raise [put forward, get up] an argument; rationalize; theorize; 〔屁()理屈を〕 chop logic

・理屈を言えば限りがない. There is no end [limit] to argument.

・勝手な理屈を並べる give [make] a large number of self-righteous pretexts [excuses]

・なんとかかんとか理屈をつけて on [under] one pretext or another

・彼はなんとか理屈をつけては学校を休もうとする. He tries to stay away from school on some pretext or other.

●理屈はいいから結果を出せ. None of your idle pretexts! Just do what is expected of you.

・そりゃなんとでも理屈はつくさ. You can always find some excuse or other (for it).
